ENGINEERING DESIGN OF 4KV AND 13KV SWITCHGEAR INTERCONNECTION WITH 69KV SUBSTATIONS, INCLUDING ARC FLASH ANALYSES OF SUBSTATIONS

Challenge: Transformer differential current inputs received from vendor were configured functionally correct, but differed from the preliminary three line configuration. The vendor added low side transformer metering devices in the 13.8KV building, which simplified the interconnection between the 13.8KV and 69KV buildings. However, it required removal of similar device installed in the 69KV building. Additionally, the current inputs to devices differed from the order PSEG typically sets for relaying, which required the vendor diagram to be confirmed by PSEG.

Solution: Milhouse, in combination with Burns & McDonnell, provided the client with a solution for the issues in question. Per PSEG input, Milhouse re-configured current connections to match the preferred input. Milhouse also revised relaying and panels in the 69KV building to remove the duplicate metering devices.

Milhouse Engineering & Construction is providing the controls design for multiple PSE&G substations that are receiving equipment upgrades. These upgrades replace existing switchgear with faster, more reliable vacuum type switchgear. As a subconsultant to Burns & McDonnell, Milhouse is providing the following scope of work.

» Modifying existing PSE&G drawings to incorporate the new equipment.
» Preparing removal/demo drawings for the old equipment.
» Creating cable pulling schedules for the project.
» Preparing interconnection designs for the switchgear vendor drawings
» Performing engineering studies to verify that existing substation power systems are sufficient for the new configuration and equipment.
» Performing arc flash studies to
verify that safety settings of the new
equipment.
