Nutrient Recovery System at Stickney Water Reclamation Plant

Chicago, Illinois

The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (MWRD) selected Black & Veatch to design and build a new nutrient recovery system at its Stickney Water Reclamation Plant (SWRP).  The plant removes and recovers phosphorus from two streams at SWRP – the centrate produced from the Post-Digestion Centrifuge building and the centrate produced from the Pre-Digestion Centrifuge Building.  The process improved water quality in local rivers, lakes and streams.  MWRD anticipated recovering an estimated 1,300 tons per year of phosphorus at the SWRP and converting it into a slow-release fertilizer, a marketable product.
