Adams Street Bridge Rehabilitation Presentation
Stan Kaderbek, P.E., S.E., LEED AP, will present at the 14th Annual Structural Engineers Association of Illinois Midwest Bridge Symposium in Chicago on April 27th. His presentation will discuss Milhouse’s role in the Adams Street Bridge Rehabilitation project and detail a procedure Milhouse devised to temporarily support the leaf.
The Adams Street Bridge over the Chicago River and viaduct west of the river were built in 1927. Supporting more than 40,000 pedestrians and 20,000 cars and buses per day the bridge, last rehabilitated in 1996, was due for a major overhaul. Milhouse was retained by Walsh Construction to provide construction engineering services. The work included rehabilitation of the S-girder and live load bearings, and the replacement of the west leaf’s longitudinal girder supporting the trunnion.
Milhouse created a procedure to temporarily support the leaf and replace the longitudinal girder in its entirety as well as raising and lowering the leaves without motors. Stan’s presentation will outline the procedure used to replace the longitudinal girder and it will highlight other challenges addressed during construction.
The day-long SAEOI event on provides a forum for bridge engineers to share design and construction information from recent projects with unique and distinguishing characteristics. The 150+ attendees represent every aspect of the bridge industry – design, construction management, material suppliers, academia, general contracting, and owner representatives.
Stan Kaderbek is a State of Illinois Licensed Structural Engineer and Licensed Professional Engineer in 19 states. He serves as Milhouse’s Vice President of Civil and Transportation overseeing a group of over 80 engineers and technicians. Stan’s vast experience in transportation includes inspection and design of nearly 350 Chicago bridges as Building Commissioner for the City of Chicago. He has also held leading roles at the Chicago Department of Transportation and the Chicago Transit Authority.
Stan presentation is scheduled for 9:20am at the 14th Annual SEAOI Midwest Bridge Symposium, held at Maggiano’s Little Italy, 111 W. Grand Avenue in Chicago, IL.
