Client-Focused Problem Solvers

A reliable and safe transportation infrastructure is vital to our modern society. At Milhouse, our transportation team focuses on designing cost-effective, reliable, and maintainable transportation systems.

Highway Design

The design of roadways begins with an understanding of agency standards, which often vary greatly even among groups in the same State or region. The Milhouse Transportation Group’s experience spans across various major agencies. With this vast expertise, our engineers provide top-tier preparation of plans, specifications and cost estimate for freeways, roads and streets.

Roadway Grading

This design must incorporate the needs of structural for bridge foundation/support elevation, drainage of the roadway, and collection of the water. Special attention is given to horizontal and vertical geometrics in the roadway based upon agency standards, speeds, and vehicle types. The grading must be stable so there are no slope failures and that traffic and structures can be safely built and maintained throughout the
construction period.

Highway Drainage

Highway drainage facilities carry water within the right-of-way and remove stormwater from the roadway itself. Drainage facilities include culverts, channels, gutters, and various types of drains. It is important that drainage design take into consideration damage to properties and to reduce the likelihood of flooding.

Utility Adjustment

Identifying potential utility conflicts within roadway improvements early in the design becomes critical to the project schedule. Milhouse will identify conflicts, coordinate with utility companies, and mitigate the conflicts.

Environmental Impact/Permit

All projects must meet applicable Federal and State laws and regulations requiring identification and evaluation of the project’s environmental impacts. Milhouse will prepare necessary documentation to reflect compliance with applicable laws and regulations.

Maintenance of Traffic (MOT)

It is important that construction has little or no adverse impact on the traveling public. Through phasing of work and re-routing of traffic, we protect both construction workers and roadway users. When designing bridges, Milhouse’s structural engineers are often involved to make sure a bridge is safe to drive on while it is being reconstructed under traffic.

Phase 1 Reports

These reports are more than just a paperwork requirement and have been created to ensure that a proposed improvement has been carefully evaluated, that appropriate policies and criteria are being used, that the design reflects an assessment of environmental concerns, and, if required, that public involvement has occurred. These reports should be able to stand on their own and document all major design decisions and exceptions to the policy.

OpenRoads 3D Modeling

By blending traditional engineering workflows for plan, profile, and cross-sections with 3D parametric modeling, OpenRoads enables the model-centric creation of all your design deliverables. This application supports all aspects of a detailed roadway design including survey, geotechnical, drainage, subsurface utilities, corridor modeling, analysis, and quantification. Milhouse team members have a combined 25+ years of experience in 3D Modeling of Transportation systems.
