Milhouse Engineering & Construction, Inc. provided civil engineering design services, including detailed plans and specifications for the construction of an artificial turf soccer field, as part of the expansion annex to Byrne Elementary School. The field featured an artificial playing surface with a full underdrain system to facilitate surface drainage and an infiltration field for the reduction of stormwater runoff volume leaving the site and the detention of runoff to control the rate at which stormwater leaves the site. This system benefits the existing City’s combined sewer system by reducing the likelihood that the outlet sewer capacity is not exceeded by uncontrolled stormwater from this site.
Permitting for the project was coordinated with the Department of Water Management and the Department of Buildings to ensure that the design meets the current City of Chicago Stormwater Control Ordinance as well as the Chicago Building Code and ADA accessibility.
In addition to the artificial turf field’s stormwater design, Milhouse engineers also facilitated the design of other site civil features in support of the construction of the building annex, including water service and sanitary sewer connections, a driveway, walking path, and other hardscaped areas.
