Milhouse is providing engineering design services for the reconstruction of the intersection of Illinois 38 at Winfield Road. This intersection is located outside of the Village of Winfield in unincorporated DuPage County, Illinois. The project includes widening and reconstructing the intersection to better accommodate traffic loads and to reduce accident frequency and severity. The intersection was on the 2000-2002 High Accident Location List. The Phase I study for the intersection determined that widening the intersection to add left turn lanes for the north- and westbound approaches will increase capacity and reduce traffic accidents.
Milhouse serves as the lead designer for this intersection. The scope of the project includes, but is not limited to, land acquisition; storm sewer system design; roadway widening; roadway reconstruction; maintenance of traffic (MOT); and traffic signal design. The project requires designing an off-site detention basin to store stormwater runoff produced by the additional roadway pavement. The land adjacent to the right-of-way is developed, which limits right-of-way acquisition and the space available for roadway widening. In addition, the jointed pavement planned for the intersection requires a detailed MOT plan to account for the location of the longitudinal joints.
