Milhouse Celebrates Opening of New CTA 95th Street Terminal
This weekend Milhouse Engineering & Construction, Inc. celebrated the grand opening of the newly improved Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) 95th Street Red Line South Terminal, along with our joint venture partner F.H. Paschen. Over 100 people gathered at the south terminal on Sunday, April 15, for the ribbon cutting ceremony with Mayor Rahm Emanuel, local aldermen, and other elected officials.
It has been nearly 50 years since the station’s last renovation, in 1969. As one of the CTA’s busiest locations, serving nearly 20,000 commuters on an average weekday, and over 1000 buses going through during the week, the facility was long overdue for an upgrade.
“The 95th Street CTA station is such an important transportation hub for our community,” said Wilbur C. Milhouse, III PE, President/CEO of Milhouse. “Growing up on the south side, it was a daily part of my commute to school. I am very proud to be a part of this momentous renovation, which will have such a significant impact, and improve the lives of so many fellow Chicagoans.”
The terminal has been transformed into a modern, multi-modal transportation facility shining over the Dan Ryan Expressway (I-94) at 95th Street. Phase one of this two-phase design–build project included a new, modern South Terminal, bus canopies, a new south bus bridge and a widener 95th Street both eastbound and westbound to facilitate safe bus operations.
Phase two of the project includes major renovations and additions to the existing north terminal, a widener bus circulation pavement, widening of the north bus bridge and canopy systems, improved vertical circulation elements in the station and commuter bridge improvements. A new pedestrian bridge above 95th Street will connect the terminals in the final stage of construction. This phase is expected to wrap near the end of 2018.
In the design phase, Milhouse is responsible for the vehicular bridge, north and south bus bridges, new retaining walls, bus turn-arounds, stormwater detention and other site work. In the construction phase Milhouse will provide management of trades, safety, quality assurance and community outreach/engagement.
This improvement to the south side transit system is a huge win for all of Chicago, and supports Milhouse’s vision, to be a positive impact – improving communities around the world through innovative engineering and construction.
