Chicago Smart Lighting Program Update with Mayor Rahm Emanuel
Earlier this week Mayor Rahm Emanuel, CDOT Commissioner, Rebekah Scheinfeld, and local Aldermen held a press event to share updates on the mesmeric Chicago Smart Lighting Program. The program initially kicked off last September, where the first set of smart lights illuminated South Chicago Avenue on the city’s south side. Milhouse’s Craig Turner, PE, PLS is the Program Manager of the project, leading the effort to replace Chicago’s 270,000 streetlights over the next four years. Today, 42,000 lights have been successfully replaced across the cities south and west sides.
The new program will save time, energy, and money, in addition to automatically sending an electronic notification to the city when a light goes out. During the press briefing, Fidel Marquez, Senior Vice President of ComEd, shared that Chicago will have a total energy efficiency savings of over $100 million over the next 10 years; using 8.5 million kilowatts less power once the project is complete.
Indeed, “this project touches everyone in the city,” said Craig.
