Milhouse Construction:

Challenge:  Milhouse Construction faced a tough task of completing all exterior & interior framing, drywall, rough carpentry, doors, and finish carpentry for this new three story, 96,000 square foot building with a very aggressive ten month schedule.

Solution:  Strong on-site leadership, attention to detail, and close coordination with the General Contractor.

Result:  Our construction crew drove the project schedule and delivered a high-quality finished building.

Construction of a new three story building include classrooms, libraries, multipurpose areas, full kitchen, administrative offices, storage, gymnatorium, theatrical stage.  Work also included renovations to an existing Chicago Park District Field House, located at the center of the new school.

In an unpresented move, the Chicago Public Schools adjusted their summer vacation schedule to match the suburbs, shortening the allowed construction duration for the project.  Milhouse responded to the aggressive schedule: during the peak of construction, we had over 35 carpenters and tapers on site.

Milhouse Construction’s scope includes:

  • Structural design and shop drawings for exterior curtain walls.
  • Heavy gauge metal framing of exterior curtain walls.  Gymnatorium walls were over 30-feet tall.
  • Light gauge metal framing of interior walls and soffits.
  • Interior and exterior drywall installation of fire rated walls.
  • Fire caulking.
  • Level 5 taping.
  • Blocking for windows, roof parapets, ADA handrails and cabinetry.
  • Installation of doors, frames, and hardware.
  • Installation of casework, cabinetry, counter tops, and FRP wall paneling.
  • Installation of solid surface wainscoting, baseboards and windowsills.
  • Installation of front stage trim.

Environmental:

As part of this project Milhouse’s environmental group was tasked with providing the following:

  • Soil Management Plan Design
  • Submittal Review
  • Removal Oversight Services
  • Weekly Project Meetings

Challenge: Oversee and document contractor activities associated with soil removal during the construction of a new replacement school

Result: Successful design was created and included in the final “Contractor’s Bid” set; contractor submittals were reviewed and approved as appropriate, weekly meetings were attended and all contractor soil management information was captured in daily field logs, bi-weekly reports and a final project summary report that were submitted to the client.
