College of Dentistry – Distance Learning Facility

Milhouse teamed with Bancroft Architects on a new distance-learning facility for the UIC School of Pharmacy. Milhouse was responsible for all of the mechanical, plumbing, and electrical design for two separate Auditoriums used for both local and distance classes at the university’s other sites in Rockford, IL, and Urbana, IL, as well as communications and teaching exchanges with other universities throughout the country.

This facility included an array of advanced electronics that record and distribute information. These had a microphone array, an advanced lighting system to automatically adjust light levels near the speaker, multiple video recording devices, fixed monitor displays, and overhead high-definition projection to a front screen. A high priority was placed on room sound levels and air distribution to avoid sound carrying over to the data transfers.

A high level of coordination between all trades was needed for the volume of separate conduits and ductwork installed in the ceiling space to avoid conflicts and keep ceilings as high as possible for proper sightlines and comfort.
