Plaza Reconstruction to Support All-Electronic Tolling

systemwide facilities

Milhouse is supporting the reconstruction of select Illinois Tollway ramp plaza facilities as the system continues its transition toward safer, more modern, all-electronic tolling infrastructure.

A key challenge of the project is maintaining active traffic through existing toll plaza locations while reconstruction is underway. At least one lane of traffic must remain open at all times to support mobility, minimize disruption to drivers, and maintain revenue continuity for the Tollway.

Milhouse is providing Phase I and Phase II engineering services, including engineering studies, contract drawings, and specifications for the selected vertical facilities. Phase I services include functional assessments of each facility and the development of recommended action plans. Phase II services advance accepted recommendations into contract documents that align with the Tollway’s scope, schedule, and budget expectations.

Across all three plazas, the scope includes demolition of existing plaza canopies and construction of new overhead all-electronic tolling monotubes, along with continuously reinforced concrete pavement. Milhouse is also supporting geometrics, Maintenance of Traffic, removals, pavement marking, and signing as part of the contract document development.

The project is currently in design.
