Voltage Optimization Program

ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING DESIGN SERVICES

Challenge: Optimize electrical power use in Northern Illinois
Solution: Begin to build a “Smart Grid”
Result: Key system components now communicate with SCADA, an important first step

A recent study by ComEd identified the potential to reduce the annual power demand by 2,000 gigawatt-hours using “smart grid” technology. Milhouse is partnering with ComEd to make this study a reality.

Milhouse is on the forefront of the program, determining and implementing upgrades needed to complete a smart grid that will adjust voltage to the “right size” for customers, allowing for a more efficient delivery to customers’ meters/

The initial steps include:

»» Upgrading all 12kV feeders from the
classic electromechanical package to an
updated microprocessor with SEL-351S
for overcurrent, reclosing and SCADA as
well as a SEL-751 for backup tripping.

»» Upgrading 138/12kV transformer Load
Tap Changers (LTCs) to the M-2001D
Beckwith Controller, making the LTCs
communication-friendly.

»» Fiber connections from each
transformer to a new SCADA unit
allowing communication between
Feeders, LTCs, and SCADA.
