Terminal 5 is currently O’Hare’s international terminal. As part of the O’Hare 21 program or the O’Hare terminal 5 renovation, a 300,000 square foot extension to the existing 700,000 square foot terminal for international arrivals will add 11 new airplane gates, and reconfiguring of the aircraft parking and O’Hare gates and amenity space and satellite concourses at the existing terminal will add three new gates and will accommodate the future fleet make-up including wide-body and dual-level aircraft. The O’Hare airport international terminal is a total upgrade for O’Hare’s airport transit system.
The concourse level of the extension for the O’Hare global terminal will house gate hold rooms, restrooms and concessions. A unique method of air distribution utilizing utility pods eliminates overhead duct distribution and provides a sunny open-plan concourse for passenger circulation.
The apron level will house airline operations, a Federal Inspection Services (FIS) sterile corridor connecting to the existing terminal, and mechanical and electrical rooms.
The building for the Chicago O’Hare International Airport is designed in accordance with the Chicago Department of Aviation Sustainable Airport Manual Green Airplane Rating System resulting in a sustainable and energy efficient building and aesthetics that can only come from Chicago artists.
The existing building upgrades include reconfiguration of the gate holding rooms to support the new gate configurations, new concourse level toilet rooms and concessions, apron level operations spaces, and an extensive reconfiguration and remodeling of the Federal Inspections Area, housing Customs and Border Control.
To conclude the O’Hare Airport construction update, upgrades to the terminal’s MEP infrastructure are required to accommodate the expansion and renovations include replacement of existing air handling units and switchgear, and the extension of chilled and high temperature hot water piping through the existing terminal to the extension. In addition to the new O’Hare Global Terminal construction update, the airplane pre-conditioned air (PCA) and central process chilled/hot water system will be extended to serve the new gates in the extension. Milhouse is providing MEP and Fire Protection services for the project.
